October 18, 1954, Pons, Charente-Maritime:

Reference for this case: 21-Oct-54-Pons.
Please cite this reference in any correspondence with me regarding this case.

Summary:

Jacques Vallée indicated in the 1970s that on October 21, 1954, in Pons, an egg-shaped object with an approximate diameter of 5 meters 50 hovered and landed near the road, and that two "dwarfs", about 1.25 meters tall, came out and returned almost immediately inside, and then the craft rose vertically producing a red trail behind it.

Jacques Vallée indicated that his source is France-Soir for October 22, 1954.

In 1979, the two "skeptical" ufologists Gérard Barthel and Jacques Brucker published in their book an article of the newspaper "Sud-Ouest" for October 20, 1954.

It read that a Mr. CA, of Pons, came - or rather was going - on Monday morning to Bordeaux, being 3 kilometers from Pons, when he was surprised to see near the road an oval shape of 5 to 6 meters in diameter, hovering and then landing near the road.

Two small men of about 1.25 meters descended from the "saucer" but, in fear when seeing the witness, they quickly reinstated their machine which left vertically, leaving a red trail behind.

The witness said that he had been able to observe the machine for about a minute, so surprised that he forgot to photograph it; which he regretted because it was "so impressive..."

Barthel and Brucker noted that the witness is anonymous, and then use irony in their own way about "believing the specialists (honest and objective) who analyzed photos of UFOs, the latter do not impress so much... the photo plates at least!!"

As of an explanation of the case, they dumbly said that "some maniac" must have invented all the stories published by the newspaper, "since witnesses do not exist."

If their quote of the article in Sud-Ouest is correct, then the case date is not October 21, 1954, as indicated Vallée and all his copycats - only Jean Sider had rectified the date - but on Monday, October 18, 1954.

Michel Carrouges lists as a case with small occupants but lacking details that of an inhabitant of Pons in the Charente-Maritime, on October 21, 1954.

The saucer briefly landed on the side of the road, then flew away. During the brief landing, the witness saw two small beings of 1 meter 25. Nothing is said about their equipment, he notes.

The two authors mention a landing at Pons on October 26, 1954.

Elsewhere in their book they reproduce the case of Pons in Charente-Maritime of October 24, 1954 such as present in the Vallée catalogue, #296, by noting that the information is brief: an object in the egg shape, from approximately 5 to 6 meters in diameter, lands close to the road. Two "dwarves", tall of 1,25 m approximately, leave from there, then go back in almost immediately. The machine rises while leaving a red trail behind.

In his book about the famous UFO landing in Socorro, Ray Stanford indicates a number of other sightings of egg-shaped craft that may be significant in this regard.

Among those cases, he indicates that on October 21, 1954, at Pons, in France, an egg-shaped craft about 18 feet long hovered and then landed near a road.

Two small beings, estimated to be about 4 feet tall, left the craft, went almost immediately back in, and the craft departed vertically at very great speed.

[Ref. bbr1:] GERARD BARTHEL AND JACQUES BRUCKER:

The two authors indicate that the following testimony appeared in the "Sud-Ouest" newspaper for October 20, 1954:

"M. C.A. of Pons (Charente-Maritime) has on his part made the following observations:"

"Monday morning while coming towards Bordeaux, within 3 kilometers of Pons, I had the surprise to see, close to the road, an oval shape of 5 to 6 meters in diameter approximately, which hovered and landed close to the road. Two small men of 1,25 meter approximately went down from the "saucer" but, frightened when they saw me, they reinstated their machine quickly and departed vertically, leaving a red trail. I could observe the machine one minute approximately, I was so surprised that I could not photograph it and I regret it. It is so impressive..."

The two authors note that the witness is anonymous, and then indulge in irony by remarks about "believing the specialists (honest and objective) who analyzed UFO photographs, UFOs precisely do not impress so much... at least not the photographic plates!!"

As for the case, they conclude that some crazed madman must have invented the stories which were published in the newspaper, "since the witnesses do not exist."

Irony apart, if their referencing of the Sud-Ouest newspaper article as of October 20 is correct, then the date of October 21 for this case in almost all other sources is wrong.

It hovered and landed close to a road, then two small beings of about 1 m 25 in height went out of it to get back inside almost immediately. The apparatus flew away vertically, releasing a red trail.

PONS (CHARENTE-MARITIME : FRANCE)

A man driving to Bordeaux saw, 3km from Pons, an oval object 5-6m diameter hovering and then landing near the road. From it emerged two little men about 1.25m tall, but when they saw the witness they rapidly re-entered the object, which took off vertically

Note: Peter Rogerson, British ufologist who became "skeptical", used my page to get the information by Barthel and Brucker, but this time he gave no credit. (See the changes between [prn1] and [prn2].)

It is not true that "most sources" date the case to the 21st: all sources except Barthel and Brucker, and hence, myself and those who read my page as it was from the start in June 2009, did this. Rogerson did it in [prn1]; the B & B book was not yet published.

Lastly, nothing indicates that the witness letter to Sud-Ouest was anonymous.

Explanations:

Map.

The logical route from Pons to Bordeaux is the D137. The journey is about 80 kilometers, the direction is practically towards the south.

From the exit of Pons, if one drives 3 kilometers as the alleged witness said, one is practically in front of even inside the municipality of Belluire. The landscape is almost flat, clear, the road, in a straight line, is surrounded by fields at least in 2017.

It is obvious that the case has no evidence to establish that it is credible, and no evidence to establish that it is not credible.
