The Martians
paid a visit
to Curzio Malaparte...

...who was not there

CURZIO MALAPARTE missed the book of his life.

A flying saucer stuffed with "Martians" like a subway train at six in the evening landed on the terrace of his summer villa in Capri. And Malaparte was not there! Disappointed, the Martians who probably wanted to have "The Skin" signed off, left.

It was a painter, Raffaele Castello, who saw them. He was walking at night at Cape Maroulo when he saw a huge disc five meters in diameter delicately landing on the Malapartean villa. Four of the Martians - they were short, dressed in overalls and speaking in low voices - entered the writer's house. Half an hour later, they left without having even taken a book. They climbed back into the craft which, casting classic bluish gleams, rose as perpendicular as it was silent and disappeared towards Sicily. Farewell Martians!

Various saucers and cigars have flown all over Italy, Portugal, Belgium, Spain (these are the first, the Franco regime seemed to intimidate the Martians so far) and naturally in France. Our happy compatriots who were favored with their vision are Pierre Pouquet in Saint-Germain-les-Belles (Haute-Vienne), Perrichou and Mrs., in Uzel (Côtes-du-Nord), Meunier in Pont-l'Abbé-d'Arnoult (Vendée) [Charente-Maritime], Boulineau in Luçon, Jean Aufard in Sisternes-la-Forêt (Pas-de-Calais), Perrault and Villerot in Brain, near Decize, Decréquy, marshall of the gendarmerie in Pommier (Pas-de-Calais), Filatte, farmer in Noyeux (Eure).

This Mr. Filatte, running across the fields to observe the saucer, fell into a pond and almost drowned.

The "saucers"
drove their first
victim of asylum

LIVORNO. October 19. (AFP.) - "They are persecuting me... They are coming to get me... I saw them land in a field... Saucers, large and small... Lights and smoke... The Martians... The Martians...", it is by shouting these pieces of sentences expressing his deep agitation that Mr. Bruno Senesi, 34, came to the hospital in Livorno, asking to be helped. But when the nurse returned with the doctor on duty, Senesi was gone. He was found hidden under a bed, shaken by violent shivers.

At the asylum, his condition causes concern.

THE FLYING SAUCERS

Paris, 19. -- The only new accounts of the overflight of France by mysterious craft come from the west.

In the Côtes du Nord, in Uzel, Mr. and Mrs. Perrichon said they saw an orange-colored flying saucer on Sunday evening. The same fact was observed in several neighboring municipalities.

In the Vendée in Pont l'Abbé d'Arnoult, a mysterious craft which rose vertically behind a hedge, has been seen by Mr. Meunier, site manager in a masonry company.

Finally, in Luçon, Mr. Boulineau observed a large luminous ball of which a crescent-shaped part was red in color. The ball was moving quickly rotating on itself and disappeared in seconds.

A "SAUCER" ARRIVES ON THE TERRACE OF THE VILLA OF AN ITALIAN WRITER

Rome, 19. -- While flying saucers disdain England, they continue their dance in the Italian skies. In Capri, one of these mysterious craft landed on the terrace of the villa of the writer Curzio Malaparte.

It was a painter, Mr. Castello, who, during a night walk, carried out at Cape Massulo, saw a huge disc about five meters in diameter, which was moving at a hundred meters of altitude. The craft descended slowly and landed on the terrace of the writer's villa. Mr. Castello who at first thought it was a helicopter approached the summer residence of Curzio Malaparte and was very surprised to see four "men" of small stature descending from the disc. The passengers of the craft, who were wearing an outfit, remained around the disc for about half an hour.

"I had the impression, said the witness of this landing, that they did not speak, or they did so in a low voice, because from where I was, I could not hear no sound. What is certain is that bluish gleams kept coming out of the disc, like pins and lightning fast, going in all directions."

"After a while, about half an hour, the four "men" entered the disc which, with a slight purring sound, rose slowly, perpendicularly, and then quickly gained altitude".

The painter only has to paint on the canvas the fantastic scene he witnessed. The painting will sell for a good price. Its author will become famous as a "science fiction" specialist.

(This genre already has its writers and filmmakers. Why wouldn't it have its painters?).

And Mr. Castello will be happy and he will be making a lot of money. All this for having seen a saucer...

A PARLIAMENTARY ASKS A WRITTEN QUESTION

Foix, 19. -- Following numerous appearances of flying machines of unknown type, currently reported in all regions of France, Mr. René Dejean, deputy of Ariège (socialist), addressed to Mr. the President of the Council a written question asking him in particular:

"Whether or not a service has been set up to collect the documentation existing to date and to study the nature and origin of the said machines; if the information currently obtained so far absolutely excludes the hypothesis of craft piloted or built by living beings of unknown species and origin; if the Government has, on the contrary, sufficient information to attribute the production of these craft to the industry of a foreign state; if in this last case the international agreements signed by France have already allowed consultations relating to the use of such craft in a possible conflict."

In Capri, a flying saucer lands on Curzio Malaparte's villa

Rome, Oct. 19. -- The flying discs continue their saraband in the sky of the peninsula and in Capri, one of these mysterious machines landed on the terrace of writer Curzio Malaparte's villa.

It is a painter, Mr. Raffaele Castello, who, during a night walk carried out at cape Massulo, saw an enormous disc approximately five meters in diameter, which moved at a hundred meters of altitude. The apparatus went down slowly and landed on the terrace of the villa of the writer.

Mr. Castello who initially thought it was a helicopter approached the summer residence of Curzio Malaparte and was very suprized to see four men of small size going down from the disc. The passengers of the machine, who were clad in an outfit, remained around the disc approximately half an hour.

"I had the impression, the witness of this landing said, that they did not speak, or then they spoke with low voices, as from place where I was, I was unable to hear any sound. What is certain, is that bluish gleams escaped without stop from the disc, similar to pins and fast like lightinings, leaving in all the directions. "After some time, half an hour approximately, the four men returned into the disc which, with a gentle humming, rose gently, perpendicularly, and took altitude quickly".

A victim of the obsession

Livourne, Oct. 19. -- Bruno Senesi, 34 years old, who entered yesterday evening at the hospital of Livourne, ducked under a bed while shouting for help.

He states that Martians had just gone down from a saucer and were chasing him.

A German theologist advises not to shoot at the saucers pilots

Bonn, Oct. 19. -- No matter what happens, don't shoot at the flying saucers. They should be approached in a charitable spirit, wrote Phillipp Dessauer, German theologist, in the catholic magazine "Wort und Wahrheit".

Professor Dessauer, deploring the skeptical attitude of the American Air Force who studied without enthusiasm the reports on the flying saucers, states that it is a bad policy to refuse to consider unexplained phenomena that this policy is likely to unchain panic if the existence of the saucers is confirmed.

One day, he says, the appearances of saucers will multiply and these machines will be probably land on earth. "The governments should consider that they have the duty to prepare their people to such an encounter".

Do "planetids" have a weapon?

Professor Dessauer wonders why the saucers did not land yet. Perhaps, he says, their occupants tried to come in contact with us and were not understood. Perhaps want they to observe the earth before landing. If this is the case their observations of the Korean war certainly did not encourage them to approach us in confidence. It may be also that there are technical reasons preventing the saucers men (the professor calls them "planetids") from landing.

In any events, professor Dessauer estimates, the planetids can come only from Mars or Venus, the other "possible" planets being at four light-years from the earth.

On Mars the force of attraction reaches only 38% of that of the earth and the air is less dense there. Perhaps the planetids seek to try out devices to be able to support life on earth.

Professor Dessauer also wonders: are planetids mortal and do they have weapons? They must be thinking creatures, for they reached a high technical level.

They must be mortals because judging from the care they take to avoid the planes of the men they must know what danger is. They do not seem to be spirits or demons for they are subjected to physical limits and need technical means.

An intense emotion seized the parishioners of Walscheid (Moselle) when, at the end of the evening mass, a group of children told them that a "Martian commando" had taken up position on a village farm.

With a thousand precautions, some of the most courageous men set out as scouts, and indeed distinguished on the terrace of the said farm, silhouettes as imprecise as suspicious, even disturbing...

A war council was held during which the virile element of the population decided to dislodge the aggressor.

While the women took refuge in the church, the men gathered an armament which, though disparate, was nonetheless handled with resolution: sticks, forks, rifles, knives...

mum the ground and the parades, the attackers progressed towards the entrenchment of the Martians and surrounded it.

No emotion being manifested among the suspicious figures, the assault was decided. One formed two columns and the bearers of edged weapons moved cautiously under the protection of the hunters, their fingers on the triggers.

At an adequate distance, the summons were launched. The Martians did not flinch: the summons became more imperative and soon a window opened, a man appeared. It was the owner of the place, who, with a sleepy voice, inquired:

- What's going on? What are you doing there?

He was told.

He replied with a huge laugh that was soon to be communicated to everyone...

He explained that he had swaddled the chrysanthemums on his terrace at nightfall to protect them from frost.

These were the suspicious figures, which had ignited the children's imaginations.

[...]

Monday evening, around 8:50 p.m., four people simultaneously saw an unknown object in the Béthune sky. One of them was in Vendin, 2 km west of Béthune, the three together in Beuvry, 2 km east.

It was to the Vendin resident, Mr. Louis Decourcelle, 53, transporter, rue de la Mairie, that the appearance was the clearest.

He was near his house when, shortly before 9 p.m., he saw in the sky, above Béthune, an indigo-colored disc which remained motionless for a moment, at a certain height. Then the disc elongated as if, at its base, a shape were unfolding. The whole thing spread a bright light in the sky. Suddenly, the craft launched blinding sparks. Then the craft went out and disappeared quickly.

Mr. Decourcelle, whom the Béthune gendarmes heard yesterday morning, at the Quay de Bruay where he works, drew for them on the blackboard, in the Quai post, the silhouette of this "saucer".

This appearance was very brief.

Mr. Decourcelle, without knowing what craft he had dealt with, is strictly certain that he was not the victim of hallucination.

At the same time, moreover, 4 or 5 km. from there, three Beuvry residents saw in the sky a luminous trail around a disc, the whole corresponding to the phenomenon observed by M. Decourcelle.

These are MM. Julien Vanarien, 35, laborer, hamlet of Gorre in Beuvry, who was accompanied by MM. Julien Vanne and Jules Delbarre, from Beuvry. All three were close to Beuvry railway station when they saw the mysterious object.

The gendarmes of Béthune took the testimony of Mr. Vanarien and attached it, in a formal report, to that of Mr. Decourcelle.

Several other residents of Béthune and Douai also saw the "saucer" at the same time Monday evening.

Other "unusual object"
in Audruicq

Sunday evening, around 10 p.m., Mr. Maurice Ramette, 24, from Naves, near Cambrai, and Mr. Léon Héquier, 28, from Sailly-en-Cambrésis, were returning on foot from Zutquerque, to Audruicq, accompanied by their wife and their two children, ages 8 and 2 and a half.

They saw high in the sky and to their right, an unusual object of round shape and white pink color, smaller than the moon but much larger than a star, and which seemed to be moving towards them. They remained petrified. The object went out. They continued on their way and saw it again, re-lit and moving away from them to their left, faster than a jet plane.

Mr. Ramette, who recounts the event, is a beet tarer at Audruicq station. He seems to be sincere. His 2 and a half year old son is still terrified of the apparition. His wife denies that she had been afraid, but admits having returned quickly to her dweeling and that she did not dare to go out to go to the movies.

The flying saucers
... at the Palais-Bourbon

Following numerous appearances of flying machines of unknown type, currently reported in all regions of France, Mr. René Dejean, Socialist deputy from Ariège, addressed a written question to the president of the council asking him in particular:

"Whether or not a service has been set up to collect the existing documentation on this matter and to study the nature and origin of these craft.

"Whether the information currently collected and gathered makes it absolutely possible to exclude the hypothesis of craft piloted or controlled by living beings of unknown species and origin;

"Whether, on the contrary, the government has enough information to attribute the production of these craft to the industry of a foreign state;

"Whether, in the latter case, the international agreements signed by France have already permitted consultations relating to the use of such craft in a possible conflict."

... AND IN THE SKY
OF BETHUNE?

After the discovery not far from their home of the Portuguese prankster who sent heavenly paper "saucers", the Béthune residents were not the last to scoff at these unusual kinds of craft.

Thus, those in favor of the existence of "flying saucers" formed a minority.

It has not been the same since yesterday, a sudden change has just taken place with the news of the appearance in the Béthune sky of a "real flying saucer"!

The news spread in town like wildfire: two men, one from Vendin-lez-Béthune the other from Beuvry, had seen "with their own eyes, seen", for a few seconds, "a disc of fire similar to the full moon..., which suddenly lengthened by the base, like a rugby ball, then took the indigo color, then moved away towards the south-west of Béthune (towards Annezin), while tracing a trail of sparks."

These two witnesses are called: Mr. Louis Decourcelle, 54, transporter on rue de la Mairie, in Vendin-lez-Béthune; the second, Mr. Julien Vanarien, 35, from Beuvry-Gorre. The latter was accompanied by Mr. Julien Vannée and Mr. Jules Delbart.

These people believe that others, like them, may have witnessed this bizarre appearance. Will there be other testimonials?

THE MAUBEUGE - ARRAS
SAUCER
WAS ALSO SEEN
IN BOUCHAIN??

It was rumored on Monday that unknown craft had been seen in the sky of Bouchain.

All information taken, it follows that people of the city had seen, Sunday, in the evening, a flying saucer (unless it was a cigar) moving quietly at a very high altitude.

One of the people said he had seen an elongated object.

We must compare the passage of this "luminous object" in Bouchain with that reported in our region of Maubeuge and in Artois, Sunday evening.

This concordance in fact would seem to establish that the trajectory of this "mysterious object" goes from East to West, at least as far as the one seen on Sunday October 17, at the end of the evening, in the region.

Quarouble resident Marius Dewilde
who first saw the saucer pilots
allegedly had another visit from the strange "little men"

We've been talking less about flying saucers lately. And yet, if the mysterious craft really exist, it seems that they continue to haunt the sky of our region. Recently, a hundred people in St-Sanlve observed a luminous disc moving in the azure. A lawyer from the Valenciennes bar, Me Gheslin, discovered at the same time, a saucer heading for Belgium.

For a while, there was no shortage of testimonies. And then suddenly it seemed that witnesses to the sidereal manifestations preferred to keep the apparitions of cigars and other flying objects to themselves.

The skepticism of most of the consulted scientists has often ridiculed people who, sometimes in good faith, have reported their visual encounter with the flying saucers.

MR. DEWILDE HAS BECOME
MISANTHROPE

It is so true that Mr. Marius Dewilde, the Quarouble reisdent who, first, saw the "interplanetary" passengers, thought for a moment to request the Public Prosecutor in Valenciennes about the sarcasm of which he was the subject. To calm him down, he had to be demonstrated that his complaint was not justified.

Since then, of course, Mr. Marius Dewilde no longer wants to receive people. One may have had the honors of the press and the cinema and not be happy. However, Mr. Dewilde is so dissatisfied with the somewhat overly satirical publicity about him, that he only confided to the authorities his latest encounter with the "Martians."

IN AN UNKNOWN
LANGUAGE

Because our Quarouble resident claims to have seen a saucer and its passengers. This time it happened in broad daylight! The craft, again landed on the railroad tracks near Mr. Dewilde's house, not in the same place, however.

The little men spoke to him: a few words in an unknown language before flying away silently and disappearing.

On the railway sleepers, the same traces as before were observed, a little wider all the same and presenting a perfect symmetry. A few places of crushed grass marked the place of landing.

What to think of this new testimony? For those in favor of the existence of flying saucers, it would have been preferable for Mr. Dewilde to stick to a first appearance. It will be difficult to admit that the Quarouble territory is of such interest to the pilots of the mysterious craft. And then, as we have observed, the points of impact noted on the sleepers were all in the longitudinal axis of said sleepers. However, it is hardly admissible that an aircraft landing can find with such precision the center of such a narrow plateau. There should have been claws on the edges of the pieces of wood. But the saucers are already the enigma. What's the point of looking for detail? You have to believe or not believe ... while waiting for the revelation.

ANOTHER SAUCER
IN AULNOY-VALENCIENNES

Let's point out that Mr. Petoux, a bank employee in Valenciennes, saw Wednesday evening between 8:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., a saucer moving above Aulnoy. Several other local people observed the phenomenon.

A "CIGAR"
IN OYE-PLAGE

Mr. Charles Pierru, secretary general of the town hall of Oye-Plage, also saw at 9:15 p.m., an opalescent glow ten meters in front of him and at a height of twenty meters, which advanced over the national road in the same direction as him, that is to say Oye-Plage to Calais.

Having not thought aoubt the saucers, he was therefore extremely surprised and stopped for a few seconds, regretting the late hour which left no light shining in the houses. Resuming his walk, Mr. Pierru went on by foot, the witness could realize very exactly the figure of the craft: the shape of a cigar (like the cabin of an airplane devoid of wings), no noise, no smoke escaped from the craft. Even at this short distance, no window could be distinguished, only this uniform luminescence demarcated the thing.

It was visible for more than a quarter of an hour, its speed not exceeding that of a cyclist. Arrived at a certain distance, towards Merck, it veered at right angle towards the interior of the grounds and, thus placed, it appeared like a sphere: the apparatus seen by the section, whose ratio with the length was about a tenth.

A CULTIVATOR THROWN
TO THE GROUND
BY A "MARTIAN"
EQUIPPED OF
LIGHT BLUE LAMPS

A farmer from the village of La Vaureille, Mr. Aimé Bousard, 47 years old, told the gendarmes of Aubusson of the "strange encounter" he made while returning from the borough of Alleyrat (Creuse).

At the place called "La Madière", he said, I saw a shape moving on the side of the road. I stopped to better observe the individual. The latter, who was lowered, got up suddenly, pointing at me two powerful projectors, lamps projecting a very dense light blue light.

He also had, on each side of the head, a very dense light green lamp which emitted much weaker rays than the others. It appeared to be 1.60 m tall and I first thought he was dressed in a spacesuit.

Suddenly, under the pressure of a blow, I was thrown across the road where I stayed for ten minutes without being able to shout or call for help. The light blue lamps were still on me. I felt and still feel pain in my legs and my right hand.

At the place indicated by the cultivator, the gendarmes noted that the earth had been freshly moved. The grass had been uprooted over an area of 70 cm in diameter. No footprints were found.

The author indicates that on October 18, 1954, in Moyaux in the Calvados, "one does not know what they saw." He indicates that only Paris-Presse for October 20 mentions this case without giving even one detail, that it is impossible to go up to the source and not even possible to check the date.

WHY 1954?

The French flap of 1954 is today more than controversial.

Thus, A.D.R.U.P. wanted to make a compilation of all the documents published in a Burgundy daily newspaper:

"Le Bien Public".

The interest of this catalogue is triple:

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 20: ON THE DANGER OF RUNNING AFTER SAUCERS! -

Lisieux - Several people were running across the fields in Noyeux, towards a flying saucer, surrounded by white and black smoke, which had been reported to them by a child. One of them, a farmer, Mr. Filate, did not stop looking at the sky; he fell into a deep pond where he could have drowned. His companions managed to save him.

[Ref. uda1:] "UFODNA" WEBSITE:

The website indicates that on 18 October 1954 at 17:30, in Moyaux, France, "An unidentified object was sighted, but with appearance and behavior that most likely would have a conventional explanation. One object was observed by one witness."

The sources are indicated as Michel, Aime, Flying Saucers and the Straight-Line Mystery, S. G. Phillips, New York, 1958; Vallee, Jacques, Computerized Catalog (N = 3073); Schoenherr, Luis, Computerized Catalog (N = 3173); Falla, Geoffrey, Vehicle Interference Project, BUFORA, London, 1979.

[Ref. ubk1:] "UFO-DATENBANK":

This database recorded the case three times instead of one:

Case Nr. New case Nr. Investigator Date of observation Zip Place of observation Country of observation Hour of observation Classification Comments Identification
19541018 18.10.1954 Moyaux France
19541018 18.10.1954 Moyaux France NL
19541018 18.10.1954 Moyaux France

Explanations:

There is obviously not enough information on the said "saucer" to evaluate what it was.

As for the place... Moyeux, Noyeux in the Eure or reported from Lisieux which is in the Calvados for the Press, Moyaux in the Calvados for Aimé Michel... I just found a place called "Noyeux" in the Eure department.

There is no Noyeux, no Moyeux, no Moyaux and no Noyaux and the only "resembling" commune in the Eure would be "Noyers" (meaning "drowned").

It is possible that the entire story was invented by the Press.

I looked for the potential frequency of the "Filate" family name - when stories are invented, names that do not exist are often used to avoid embarrassing anyone. Well, the specialized website filae.com - below - reports only 4 people born in France between 1891 and 1990 bearing this name...

So I think there is a good chance that all this is the invention of a journalist "in need of material", as one said then.

Otherwise, anyway, this is not a case that would be a good example of extraterrestrial visits...
